Why us
Oak, tulip poplar, sweetgum, hickory, and maple drop leaves, seeds, and pollen from spring through late November.
Water that cannot drain backs up against the fascia board, saturates the wood, and starts the rot cycle. It pools at the foundation.
Rain gutter cleaning, clogged gutter clearing, gutter repair, gutter replacement, seamless gutter installation, gutter guard installation, and gutter maintenance — all in Charlottesville and Albemarle County.
After a storm, overflow and a section pulling away from the fascia are scheduled ahead of routine visits — usually same or next business day, inside our 9am to 5pm window, seven days a week.
Schedule
Twice per year for most properties with mature hardwood canopy.
After the oak, hickory, and tulip poplar drop is complete.
After pollen and tree seed season. Tulip poplar and sweetgum produce heavy seed capsule drop that packs gutter troughs quickly. Oak catkins add to the volume.
Properties with minimal canopy — newer subdivisions, open lots — may get by with a single annual cleaning. Properties under mature oak, poplar, or hickory typically cannot.
What goes wrong
Water sitting in a blocked gutter contacts the fascia board directly. Fascia rot develops over one to two seasons of repeated overflow. Replacing rotted fascia runs $8 to $20 per linear foot. Gutter cleaning costs a fraction of that.
Blocked downspouts discharge water at the foundation instead of routing it away from the house. On Charlottesville Piedmont clay soil, which has low permeability, water pooling at the foundation has nowhere to go and begins moving against the foundation wall or into the crawl space.
Overflow that runs behind the gutter rather than over the front edge saturates the soffit. Soffit replacement is more expensive and more disruptive than fascia repair.
Debris-filled gutters freeze solid in winter temperature cycles. Ice in the gutter backs up under shingles at the roofline — a common cause of ceiling stains in Charlottesville properties after freeze-thaw cycles in January and February.
What we do
Full clearing of debris from the trough — leaves, seed pods, oak catkins, silt buildup, and compacted debris from prior seasons.
Leaking seams and end caps, gutters peeling away or pulled off the fascia, rotted wood behind the run, rust spots in older aluminum, sagged sections holding water.
For runs past repair: lost slope with standing water, multiple leaking joints on sectional gutters, or rust and holes that patching will not hold.
New installation for rooflines without gutters, replacement of failed or heavily damaged gutters, or upgrading from sectional to seamless.
Leaf guards, leaf covers and gutter screens. Reduces debris and extends the interval between cleanings. Micro-mesh, reverse curve and foam inserts each behave differently on different debris.
A trough that was clean in October can be running blocked by late November from oak and poplar drop alone.
Single-family homes throughout Charlottesville and Albemarle County.
Fall gutter cleaning combined with lawn leaf removal on the same visit. The crew clears the lawn and beds, then cleans gutters before leaving.
Typically April through early May. Clears sweetgum seed pods, tulip poplar debris, oak catkins, and the fine particulate matter that builds up through spring.
After cleaning, a condition report noting any issues found: loose spikes or screws, sag in a section, separated joints, holes, or areas where the gutter has pulled away from the fascia.
Twice-yearly cleaning, fall and spring, for properties with heavy hardwood canopy. First visit in November after peak leaf drop, second in April after pollen and seed season.
The downspout carries water from the trough to the ground. A blocked downspout means water backs up into the trough and overflows at the roofline even after the trough has been cleared.
Many properties have downspouts connected to underground drain pipes rather than discharging at grade. These are not visible from the ground and frequently go years without cleaning.

Straight answers
The species mix. Oak drop produces a high volume of leaves plus catkin debris in spring. Tulip poplar drops large leaves in fall and seed capsules in spring. Sweetgum produces spiky seed balls that catch and hold other debris in the trough. Hickory drops both leaves and nut casings. A property with a mix of these four species under mature canopy will fill a cleaned trough in six to eight weeks during fall and three to five weeks during spring pollen season.
This is why the generic "clean your gutters once a year" advice does not apply to most Charlottesville properties. The canopy here is dense, the tree species are high-debris producers, and the season runs longer than in areas with less hardwood cover. Gutters homeowners think are fine in September are often running blocked by Thanksgiving. A twice-yearly schedule — fall and spring — is the right match for this canopy, not a single annual visit.
Late November to early December for the fall cleaning, after oak and poplar drop is complete. Cleaning before the full leaf drop is finished means the gutters fill again before winter. Cleaning too late in December risks frozen debris in the trough that cannot be removed without damage.
April to early May for the spring cleaning, after the bulk of pollen and seed drop is finished but before summer rain season starts. Gutters entering summer blocked from spring debris will overflow during Charlottesville's frequent afternoon thunderstorms in June, July, and August.

Twice a year
Scooping the trough and leaving the downspout packed just moves the clog. Every visit ends with water running clean through the downspout and out the other end.
