Why us
Most winters, snow melts in two or three days. Residents wait it out.
Charlottesville City Code Section 28-25 gives property owners 24 hours to clear the sidewalk after snowfall ends.
Snow plowing, driveway snow removal, sidewalk snow removal, salting, de-icing, snow blowing and ice management — all residential, all of Charlottesville and Albemarle County.
City Code Section 28-25 requires property owners to clear sidewalks within 24 hours of snowfall ending. After that, the city issues a warning. If still uncleared, they send a contractor and bill you the full cost. One recent winter season produced more than $9,000 in reimbursement fees to residents who did not clear in time.
What goes wrong
Charlottesville clears Route 250, Route 29, Barracks Road, and Hydraulic Road first. Belmont, Fry's Spring, Woolen Mills, Forest Lakes, and the JPA corridor can wait days. Your driveway is never included in any city program.
Fix: We dispatch starting at 9 AM the morning after a storm.
Nearly 100 residents received citations during the first full enforcement season. Many did not know the ordinance was being enforced. The elderly homeowner who cannot shovel gets the same notice.
Fix: Book service before the storm. Sidewalk clearing is available combined with the driveway visit.
City plows push snow into the travel lane and then the parking lane. That bank ends up at the base of your driveway. It freezes harder than the original snowfall.
Fix: Apron clearing is included in every driveway visit.
Residents have described using garden edgers and construction bars to chop through what they call "snowcrete" — compacted ice from repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Standard shovels snap on this.
Fix: Pre-salting before the storm stops ice from bonding to pavement. Once bonded, it takes mechanical equipment to remove. Pre-treatment costs far less than emergency ice removal.
What we do
Residential driveway plowing for single-car and two-car driveways. Cleared to the edges — not a single pass down the center.
Mechanical removal for driveways with compacted ice or snowpack from back-to-back freezes. Includes apron clearing at the street end where city plows deposit snow.
Cleared to full walkable width. Timed to meet the 24-hour requirement under City Code Section 28-25. Available as a combined visit with driveway service.
Rock salt applied after clearing. Prevents overnight refreezing. Even coverage across the full driveway and walkway surface, not just a center strip.
Salt or liquid de-icer applied before precipitation begins. Stops ice crystals from bonding to the pavement surface. Must be applied before the storm starts — not during it.
Removal of thick ice layers from repeated freeze-thaw cycles common in Charlottesville winters. Requires mechanical equipment. Priced separately by depth and surface area.
Entry walkways, front steps, and paths between driveway and door. Highest slip risk on a residential property. Cleared in the same visit as the driveway.
Real pricing
Typically $30 to $90 per event for residential driveways, depending on driveway size, accumulation depth, and whether salting is included. Properties with compacted ice, multiple surfaces, or pre-treatment needs are quoted separately after an address review.

FAQ
After the storm
A single pass down the middle leaves you a narrow lane and a refrozen rim by morning. Driveways get cleared to their full width, with the apron at the street opened where the county plow piled it.
